
The hotel opened on schedule and on budget. A rigorous public bidding process was conducted to comply with the state of Alabama’s regulations for sourcing from local and disadvantaged groups.
Set amidst the public state park’s 6,150 acres, the Hilton has a remarkable eco-friendly operating ethos. Owned by the state of Alabama/Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the development was financed by some of Alabama’s earliest settlements from the British Petroleum oil spill. It is built on the site of a former hotel destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. The Lodge is one of the only hotels in the world with a combination of three high-end certifications in energy efficiency and fortified construction, including USGBC LEED Gold. This design reduces energy use by 32 percent and interior water use by 35 percent.
R-W Purchasing Partners (formerly Bray Whaler) worked hand-in-hand with the state, the general contractor and the operator to ensure that all aspects of the FF&E and OS&E met the state’s stringent requirements.
